He also formulated the famous Stability and -Stability conjectures that accurately characterize stable dynamical systems. In the decades of the seventies and eighties, he developed a coherent group of ideas, problems and conjectures, pointing to a global theory of chaotic dynamical behavior, based on his own work and that of his students and collaborators. This effort turned into the ambitious program he described in his 1999 article "Asterisque", which represents the central subject of present day research on dynamical systems. Considered as one of the new branches of mathematics, the Theory of Dynamical Systems watched its flowers bloom and its first fruits develop throughout the 20th Century, and it enters the new millennium formally constituted as an independent scientific discipline. It was Henry Poincaré, considered one of the last mathematicians possessing encyclopedic knowledge, to whose genius we owe the introduction of ideas that revolutionized mathematics, mechanics and theoretical physics of the end of the 19th Century, and opened new foundational roads, through which the science of mathematics cruised during the 20th Century. It is in this avant-garde terrain where Jacob Palis has developed his work. Palis’s career is filled with uncommon and unusual academic achievements. At the age of 26 he finished his masters at the University of California, Berkeley, where he obtained his doctorate degree only a year later. It was precisely in his doctoral dissertation where he introduced the concept of global foliation (stable or unstable), that plays a decisive role in the analysis of structural stability of dynamical systems (vectorial and diffeomorphic fields) as well as in the stability of parametrized families of dynamical systems. Professor Palis has formed a solid scientific school of Dynamical Systems around his collaborators of the Institute of Pure and Applied Mathematics in Rio de Janeiro, an institution of academic excellence which he heads at the moment. His special teaching vocation has led him to tutor 36 doctoral dissertations and 2 master’s theses in mathematics, an unusual number in this field, to Brazilian, Uruguayan and Chilean students, whose work has been published in scientific journals, bringing greater prestige to their scientist director.
Dr. Palis has been made Doctor Honoris Causa by the universities of Perú, La Habana, Santiago de Chile, Warwick, Chile, and the State from Río de Janeiro. He is a foreign member of the Science Academies of Europe, Mexico, Chile, United States, Norway, Russia and India. |
