He studied Chemical Engineering at the Universidad de Sao Paulo [University of Sao Paulo], and is one of the most recognized experts in the world on catalytic processes applied to the solution of problems related to the manufacture of synthetic gasolines and also, to the production of raw materials for the synthesis of synthetic fibers. He is also known for the development of processes that lessen combustion produced by automobile engines that use gasoline with high alcohol contents, thus these processes help reduce environmental pollution. After studying chemical engineering at the Universidad de Sao Paulo [University of Sao Paulo], he got his masters at the Universidad Federal [Federal University] of Rio de Janeiro and his PhD at the Technische Universität Berlin [Technical University of Berlin]. After obtaining his PhD, he entered post doctoral studies at the Institut de Recherches sur la Catalyse et l’environnement de Lyon [Institute for Research on Catalysis and the Environment of Lyon], France and at the Universität Karlsruhe [Karlsruhe University] in Germany. In the decade of the 80’s, in the midst of the world’s energy crisis, he furthered developing chemical engineering in Brazil’s government program of applied research, making emphasis on the solution of national problems. In the petrochemical industry, Martin Schmal’s work is recognized for its innovative character. He pioneered taking the step from the fundamentals of theoretical chemistry into industrial applications of great economic importance, in an engineering specialty extremely centered in the theoretical realm. His teaching work has been impressive. At the same time of his intense activity as a researcher, Schmal has tutored almost 70 theses for masters and 20 doctorate dissertations, and is the author of hundreds of articles published in the most recognized international journals of his specialty. Brazil is recognized all over the world as one of the most important catalysis research centers due, in part, to Martin Schmal’s work. He developed a catalyst capable of reducing the temperatures needed for diesel combustion, from 600 degrees centigrade to 150 degrees, eliminating the emission of these particles. Schmal continues to develop innovations in the catalysts, and works associated to the most important European centers of research, like the Max Planck Institute in Germany. Martin Schmal has received many awards, among them, the Premio en Ingeniería Química de Brasil [Chemical Engineering Award of Brazil]; Premio de la Academia de Ciencias Brasileñas 1996-1998 [1996-1998 Award of the Brazilean Academy of Sciences]; the Premio a los 100 Científicos más destacados del estado de Río de Janeiro [100 Most Distinguished Scientists of the State of Rio de Janeiro Award]; the Surface Science Society of Japan Award (the most important in its area); and the renowned Premio Humboldt [Humboldt Award], as well as the Premio México de Ciencia y Tecnología 2002 [2002 Mexico Award for Science and Technology]. |
