He is a distinguished researcher of the fundamentals of statistical mechanics and his most important scientific contribution is the generalization known as “nonextensive” statistical mechanics of the well-known Boltzmann-Gibbs theory. Since he originally formulated it in 1988, he has worked on the fundamentals of this new version of statistical mechanics and its thermodynamics counterpart. These developments have had an important impact on disciplines such as biogenesis, genetics, immunology, economy, cognitive psychology, and in general, the complex systems. He obtained his degree in Physics at the Colegio Nacional Agustín Álvarez [Agustín Álvarez National College] in Argentina, and received his masters in Physics of the Solid State at the Universidad Nacional [National University] of Cuyo, Argentina. During the decade of the 70’s he traveled to Europe, where he earned his PhD at the University of Paris Orsay, and later on he embarked on post doctoral work at Oxford University, England. He has been visiting professor at several research centers such as the University of North Texas; Universidade Federal [Federal University] of Río Grande do Norte, Brazil; Michigan State University; Universidade Federal [Federal University] of Pernambuco, Brazil; and Ecole Superieure de Physique et Chimie [City of Paris Industrial Physics and Chemistry Higher Educational Institution], France. He has published some 300 articles in the best international journals of his field, several of them reviewing various subjects in his field. His work has been cited some 6,200 times in international journals. In addition to having accomplished significant advances in our knowledge of the physical world, he has contributed to the formation of a copious group of young researchers that, throughout many years, have been attracted, from several countries around the world, by his qualities as a man and a scientist. This has reflected in his tutoring of more than 20 doctoral dissertations. In 2002 he was made an honor member of the Asociación para la Investigación y Docencia Universitaria [Association for University Research and Teaching].
