She obtained her doctoral degree from the University of Sao Paulo in 1974, with a thesis on a topic that has since then been her major object of research: the genetics of hereditary neuromuscular diseases, in particular some types of muscular dystrophy. She was a pioneer in Brazil in the study on the biochemical alterations that can be detected for diagnostic purposes in the blood plasma of muscular dystrophy patients.

Premio México 2007 Ramón Latorre de la Cruz

Considered to be his most important scientific contribution, the discovery of ionic channels brought him international recognition in the field of biophysics. Currently, he is Professor of Neurosciences at the Universidad de Valparaiso, Chile. The discoveries and innovative ideas of Latorre are amply recognized and his work has over 8,600 citations. He is Chile’s scientist with the largest number of citations and surely, one of Latin America’s most cited scientists.

He is one of the most widely quoted and internationally recognized Spanish scientists and creator of important work in the field of genetic development and cellular differentiation. One of his most important contributions is his approach to explain the paradox that, beginning with a single cell, other cells are formed in successive divisions and are different in their configuration and function.
