History of the Award

On February 27th, 1990, the Presidency of the Republic, instituted this award in recognition of the scientific and technological work carried out by researchers and technologists in Latin America and the Caribbean.

In 1991, on recommendation of the Science Consulting Council the Premio Mexico acquires an Iberian-American character, as its scope is widened to include Central and South America, the Caribbean, Spain and Portugal, in order to foster and enhance the links between the scientific communities of these countries and Mexico. Thus, the award does not consider participation of researchers from Mexico’s scientific and technological community.

The Premio Mexico has been awarded annually to individuals of recognized professional prestige that have made significant contributions to universal scientific knowledge or technological advance, with international impact of great consequence, and most importantly, having formed a school or significant human resources, paying special attention to work undertaken predominantly in institutions located in the area.

The Premio Mexico has acquired great prestige and recognition among the various countries of the area. Proof of this is the high caliber of the candidates that have been recognized.
