Jaime G. de la Garza Salazar was born in the City of Monterrey on December 12th, 1934. He is a surgeon from the Universidad Autónoma of Nuevo León. Did work in internal medicine and medical oncology at the South Texas Medical School of San Antonio, Texas and the Mayo Clinic of Rochester, Minnesota. Currently, he is a clinical researcher of the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología of the Ministry of Health, and permanent “F” researcher of the Researchers Evaluating Committee of the Institutes Coordination Office of the Ministry of Health, and National Researcher, Level II, of the National System of Researchers. AccomplishmentsA pioneer of clinical oncology in Mexico, he was the first doctor to use chemotherapy and to spread the knowledge and research of anti-cancer agents in our country. As a researcher and later as director of the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, he furthered modernization and the acquisition of high-technology equipment to study and treat the various types of neoplasias, placing special emphasis on a timely diagnosis and humane treatment. Posts HeldDr. de la Garza has been Director General of the Instituto Nacional de Cancerología, President of the Mexican Council on Oncology and of the Mexican Society for Oncologic Studies. He is a Member of the Consulting Council of the Universidad Autónoma of Nuevo Leon and a past Member of its Governing Body. He was Coordinator of the International Affairs Committee of the American Society of Clinical Oncology, founder of the Latin American and Caribbean Society of Medical Oncology, and a Member of the “Development [sic] Countries Task Force” of the “European Society of Medical Oncology”.
