His area of specialization is statistical physics and his research often involves the description of phase transitions in condensed matter. His most important contributions involve studies on inhomogenous fluids, solidification, interfacial transitions, microemulsions, confined fluids, liquid crystals, magnetism and superconductivity in bidimensional materials, in addition to ramdom walks and non-linear dynamics at the edge of chaos and generalized statistical mechanics such as the so-called nonextensive statistical mechanics and superstatistics. For his outstanding achievements he has received many honors and distinctions, such as the prize for Research in the Exact Sciences granted by the Mexican Academy of Scientific Research, the Manuel Noriega Science and Technology Award bestowed by the OAS and the National University Award for Research in the Exact Sciences granted by the UNAM. He has been granted a Guggenheim Scholarship and the Mexican National Prize of Science and the Arts. From 1990 to 1995 he was a member of the International Centre for Theoretical Physics of Trieste, Italy. He has been a member of the American Physical Society since 1999. He has belonged to the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores since 1990 and is a member of the Mexican Science Advisory Council of the Presidency of the Republic. |
