He was born in Mexico City in 1940. Studied Medicine at the UNAM. Got his doctorate in Biochemistry in the Faculty of Chemistry. Is an Emeritus Member and professor in the Instituto de Fisiolofía Celular (Insititute of Cellular Physiology) at the same National University. Has been professor in institutions of higher education, like the CINESTAV, Universidad Autónoma Metropolitana, (Autonomous Metropolitan University), IMSS (Institute of Social Security), Health Institutes and hospitals of the Health Secretary, universities of Guanajuato, Guadalajara , Autonomous of Puebla, University of Zulia in Venezuela and University of Honduras.
His research work has been centered on neuro chemical and neuro physiological mechanisms of inter neuronal communication in the central nervous system, epilepsy, neuronal death and several experimental models of neurodegenerative diseases. Has promoted the use of scientific knowledge in matters of Public Health and Bioethics.
For eight years he was the executive editor of International Neurochemistry and member of the editorial board of the Journal of Neurochemistry; Neurochemical Research; and Archives of Medical Research.
Magisterial lecturer in numerous congresses and symposiums, both national and international. Belongs to the International Society of Neurochemistry; Mexican Society of Biochemistry; American Society of Neurochemistry; Society for Neuroscience; Mexican Academy of Science; National Academy of Medicine. He is founder and vice-president of the College of Bioethics, and member of the Consejo Consultivo de Ciencias de la Presidencia de la República (CCC) [Science Consulting Council of the President’s Office].
He has received the Prize of the Academia de la Investigación Científica (Academy of Scientific Research) today Academia Mexicana de Ciencias (Mexican Academy of Science); National Investigator of Excellence; Premio Universidad Nacional en Investigación en Ciencias Naturales (Award National University for Research in Natural Science); Award of Research in Epilepsy, SSA; Award Rosenkranz (Syntex); Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes [National Award for Science and Arts].
His contributions can be found in 147 international publications, including 124 articles in journals and 23 chapters in books, that have been cited more than 3100 times. In Mexico he has published 6 books, one of scientific circulation and 5 for teaching, several chapters in books and numerous articles of policies and scientific divulgation. Has tutored 25 theses of B:S:, 16 Masters and 12 Doctorates. |
