Born in Mexico City in 1940. He earned a bachelor's degree in biology at the UNAM; a master's degree in Agricultural Botany at the Postgraduate College, a doctorate in ecology at the University of Wales. It has been a professor at the University of Chapingo, the Organization for Tropical Studies in Costa Rica, the University College of North Wales, from the universities of Buenos Aires, Texas, Stanford and Barcelona. Is a researcher emeritus at the Institute of Ecology at UNAM.

It has specialized in studying the ecology of plant populations and systems, biodiversity and Darwinism. It is internationally recognized for his expertise on biodiversity and ecosystem conservation, global climate change, and has been a promoter of higher education, science and technology.

He was director of the Institute of Biology, coordinator of the Scientific Research and Chancellor of the Universidad Nacional Autonoma de Mexico. He has chaired the Botanical Society of Mexico, the Academy of Scientific Research and the Association for Tropical Biology. He was national coordinator of the National Commission for Knowledge and Use of Biodiversity (Conabio), chairman of the Union of Latin American Universities (UDUAL). It belongs to the Consultative Council of Sciences of the Presidency of the Republic. He is a member of the National College of the Third World Academy of Sciences, the U.S. National Academy of Sciences, Foreign Member of the Royal Society, and the European Academy of Sciences.

Premio Nacional Forestal; Natural Science Award of the Academy of Scientific Research; Medal of Merit of the Botanical Society of Botany Mexico; Medal "Alfonso L. Herrera" in Ecology and Conservation; National Prize of Sciences and Arts, the Henry Shaw Medal Missouri Botanical Garden, Conservation Biology Award of the Society for Conservation Biology; Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Conservation Biology. He has received honorary doctorates from universities Nacional Mayor de San Marcos in Lima, Peru; Welsh in Britain; New York; College of Postgraduates; of Colima and the Autonomous State of Hidalgo.

He has published over 110 research papers and several books, among them: First and second editions of Tropical Trees of Mexico, The Muses of Darwin and Manual Weeds of the Valley of Mexico. He has directed 28 degree thesis, master's and doctorate, and has been the main promoter of the group of ecological research in Mexico, at the Institute of Ecology at UNAM.
