He was born in Mexico City in 1950. He studied chemical engineering at the Facultad de Química [Faculty of Chemistry] of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico], where he also earned a Master’s degree. He obtained his PhD in Science at the Claude Bernard University in Lyon, France. He has held teaching positions at the National Center for Scientific Research in France and at the University of Texas. He is a researcher of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI) [National Researcher System]. He is one of the main promoters of technological innovation, with which he is thoroughly familiar because of his first hand experience in academia, private industry and the public sector. He has been corporate manager of Research and Development of Industrias Resistol; of Empresas GIRSA; and corporate director of Technology of Grupo DESC. He served as executive director of Research and Graduate Studies of the Mexican Petroleum Institute, and as corporate manager of research and technological development of the Centro de Investigación y Desarrollo (CID) [Research and Development Center]. He was director of the Centro de Investigación y Asesoría Tecnológica en Cuero y Calzado [Leather and Footwear Research and Technology Counseling Center] in Leon; president of the Asociación Mexicana de Directivos de la Investigación Aplicada y el Desarrollo Tecnológico [Mexican Association of Applied Research and Technological Development Executives]. He currently serves as Deputy Director of Technological Development and Innovation Businesses at the Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (Conacyt) [National Council of Science and Technology], and is a member of the Consejo Consultivo de Ciencias de la Presidencia de la República (CCC) [Science Consulting Council of the President’s Office]. He has received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes [National Award for Science and Arts]; the Premio CIBA a la Innovación Tecnológica [CIBA Prize for Technological Innovation]; Premio Nacional de Química Andrés Manuel del Río [Andrés Manuel del Río National Prize for Chemistry]; Premio Nacional HADITA [HADITA National Prize]; he is a member of the Academia Mexicana de Ingeniería [Mexican Academy of Engineering]. He has published 34 scientific papers in international journals, and tutored 27 BS and 5 master’s theses and 4 PhD dissertations. |
