He was born in Mexico City in 1939. He studied Physics at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico], and obtained his B.S., M.S. and PhD degrees. He was a Researcher of and, later on, a consultant for the Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo [Mexican Petroleum Institute] for 15 years. He is a Researcher and a Former director of the Instituto de Física [Physics Institute] of said Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico]. He is an Investigador Nacional Nivel III [Level III National Researcher] of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI) [National Researcher System].
His main research topics have been atomic and molecular physics, quantum mechanics, group theory, and theoretical and experimental catalysis, as well as the collective seismic response. He completed the first full study of a real catalytic process (the Ziegler-Natta polymerization) with no empirical approximations. Resulting from the above, he decided to create a theoretical and experimental research group in Mexico with many research institutions participating. Out of this collaboration effort in basic science research many 100% Mexican patents in the catalysis area were obtained.
