He was born in Mexico City in 1942. He obtained his physician surgeon degree with honorable mention at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico]. He specialized in neurosurgery at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) [Mexican Institute of Social Security]. He also obtained his medical sciences Master’s and Doctorate degrees in Neurosurgery, at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico]. He is a National Researcher of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI) [National Researcher System], and was Investigador Titular “D” [Incumbent Researcher “D”], the highest researcher category at the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) [Mexican Institute of Social Security]. He made the first experimental transplant in history of nerve cells taken from a human embryo, the starting point for modern stem cell research. Dr. Madrazo is one of the most-sought after neurosurgeons in North America for the treatment of Parkinson's disease. Dr. Madrazo is a pioneer in the area of brain transplants, and conducts research focused on studying the regeneration of the central nervous system. His laboratory is especially committed in the search for spinal cord regenerating mechanisms. He is a former director general médico [Medical Director General] of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) [Mexican Institute of Social Security]. Founder and scientific director of the Centro de Investigación CAMINA [CAMINA Research Center]. He is a member of the Consejo Consultivo de Ciencias de la Presidencia de la República (CCC) [Science Consulting Council of the President’s Office].
He is the recipient of the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes [National Award for Science and Arts]; Premio “Miguel Otero”, del Consejo de Salubridad General [the “Miguel Otero” Prize of the General Health Council]; Premio “Académico Gonzalo Castañeda”, de la Academia Mexicana de Cirugía [the “Academic Gonzalo Castañeda” Prize, of the Mexican Surgery Academy]; Premio “Everardo Landa” de la Academia Nacional de Medicina [the “Everardo Landa” Prize of the National Academy of Medicine]. The Premio Nacional de Cirujía “Dr. Francisco Montes de Oca” [the “Dr. Francisco Montes de Oca” National Prize for Surgery]; Premio “Aida Weiss” [“Aida Weiss” Prize] from the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico]. President Miguel de la Madrid granted him a Medal of Recognition “for the international repercussion of his scientific work.” A Sesión Solemne de la Academia Nacional de Medicina [Solemn Session of the National Academy of Medicine] was held for the presentation and recognition of his work on the Treatment of Parkinso’n Disease. He received the “Nobel” Medal of the Karolinska Institute (Nobel Lecturer), in Stockholm, Sweden. He obtained the “José Ma. Morelos y Pavón” (Maximum Distinction) from the Universidad Autónoma de Morelos [Autonomous University of Morelos] and the State government.
Doctor Madrazo has 209 publications in refereed journals and has written 4 books. He has 2,369 citations in the "Science Citation Index". He is considered one of the twelve most often cited Mexican scientists in the 1981-1991 decade by the Life Sciences & Clinical Medicine Institute for Scientific Information (ISI).
