Born in Mexico City in 1943. He is a chemical engineering graduate of the Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Químicas [National School of Chemical Sciences]. He earned a PhD at the University of Toulouse and another at the Paul Sabatier University, one in engineering and the other one in Chemistry. He undertook postdoctoral studies at the University of Lyon, the National Polytechnic Institute of Toulouse, and the University Pierre et Marie Curie of Paris, France. He is a member of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI) [National Researcher System], Level III. He is a full-time professor at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico].
An expert in analytical chemistry, chemical and petrochemical engineering, is particularly recognized for his contributions in the development of manufacturing processes of solid catalysts. He is an innovator in the use of ion exchange resins as catalysts in liquid-solid systems, etherification, esterification, transesterification and hydrolysis reactions.
He developed a method for operation diagnosis of sulfur recovery plants. He has participated in the development of kinetic simulators of naphtha reformation plants for the petrochemical industry.
He belonged to the Comité evaluador de becas en el area de Ingeniería Química del Consejo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología (Conacyt) [Conacyt’s Chemical Engineering scholarship evaluating committee]. He directed the departamento de evaluación y seguimiento de proyectos de investigación [department of evaluation and follow-up of research projects] at the Instituto Mexicano del Petróleo [Mexican Petroleum Institute]. He has directed specific projects for Petroleos Mexicanos (PEMEX) and leading private companies in the area of catalysis and chemical engineering. He is a member of the Consejo Consultivo de Ciencias de la Presidencia de la República (CCC) [Science Consulting Council of the President’s Office].
He has received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes [National Award for Science and Arts]; the Premio IMIQ "Estanislao Ramirez"; the Premio Nacional de Química Andrés Manuel del Río [Andrés Manuel del Río National Chemistry Prize]; he is Académico de Número de la Academia Mexicana de Ingeniería [Full Member of the Mexican Academy of Engineering]. Dr. Hernández Luna is the recipient of the Premio Universidad Nacional en Innovación Tecnológica y Diseño Industrial [National University Prize for Technological Innovation and Industrial Design]. He also received the Premio Banamex de Ciencia y Tecnología [Banamex Prize of Science and Technology].
He has published more than 20 scientific papers, obtained at least 13 patents and has authored several books, science divulging articles and teaching material on his subject. |
