He was a professor in the department of electrical engineering at MIT; in the Mechanical Intelligence department of the University of Edingburgh, of the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Cinvestav) [Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute], where he founded the Master’s and Doctorate programs in Computer Science; of the Instituto de Investigación en Matemáticas Aplicadas y Sistemas [Institute of Applied Mathematics and Systems Research] of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico], where he headed the Computing Department and of the Unidad Profesional Interdisciplinaria de Ingeniería y Ciencias Sociales y Administrativas (UPIICSA) [Professional Interdisciplinary Unit of Engineering and Administrative and Social Sciences] of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) [National Polytechnic Institute].
In Artificial Intelligence, he developed the method of restriction propagation, to be able to recognize polyhedron-containing images; he invented form numbers, in order to quantify the resemblance between two forms or silhouettes. In geoprocessing, he pioneered in the development of digital terrain models. He analyzed on-satellite photographs to quantify wheat harvest. In parallel computing, he built a multiprocessor that uses Lisp as machine language and lacks an operating system. He is a former director of the Centro Científico IBM para América Latina [IBM Scientific Center for Latin America]. He is a former researcher of MicroElectronics and Computer Corporation (MCC); Engineering Vice-President at International Software Systems; Founder and President of SoftwarePro Internacional. Founded and directed the Centro de Investigación en Computación (CIC) [Center for Computing Research] of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) [National Polytechnic Institute]. He was elected a Fellow of the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM) and later appointed Member of the ACM Publications Board. Dr. Guzmán currently works at the Centro de Investigación en Computación (CIC) [Center for Computing Research], where he is conducting research in the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) for data mining, semantic processing and information systems applications. He is a member of the Consejo Consultivo de Ciencias de la Presidencia de la República (CCC) [Science Consulting Council of the President’s Office]. He received the Premio Nacional de Informática [Informatics National Prize], granted by the Academia Mexicana de Informática [Mexican Academy of Informatics] the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes [National Award for Science and Arts]; and the Presea Lázaro Cárdenas [Lázaro Cárdenas Medal] of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional (IPN) [National Polytechnic Institute]. In addition to writing scientific articles for specialized journals, he was Editor of the Colección de Ciencia en Computación [Computer Science Collection] of Mexico’s publishing house: Fondo de Cultura Económica. He has also directed Computación y Sistemas [Computing and Systems] a computer science, refereed journal, for original, unpublished, contributions in English, Portuguese and Spanish.
