He was born in Tuxpan, Veracruz, in 1924. He studied Civil Engineering at the Escuela Nacional de Ingenieros y Matemáticas of the Facultad de Ciencias [National School of Engineering and Mathematics of the Faculty of Sciences] of the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico]. He pursued his doctorate degree in applied mathematics at Brown University in Providence, Rhode Island, as well as postdoctoral studies at the International Meteorological Institute at the University of Stockholm, Sweden. He is a former director of the Instituto de Geofísica [Geophysics Institute], and of the Centro de Ciencias de la Atmósfera [Center for Atmospheric Sciences] of the UNAM. He currently is Researcher Emeritus of the Centro de Ciencias de la Atmósfera [Center for Atmospheric Sciences] of the UNAM. Dr. Adem Chahín’s magnum opus is the thermodynamic climate model known as Model Adem, published in 1962 in the journal Tellus. Also outstanding are his contributions in the fields of monthly and seasonal forecasts in the Northern Hemisphere, with an emphasis on Mexico; monthly and seasonal forecasts of the temperature of the hemisphere’s oceans, especially the Gulf of Mexico; the climatic effect due to the rise of CO2 and the variation of the solar constant. He also developed a numerical simulation of past and future climates. He is a member of El Colegio Nacional [The National College] since 1974, a member of the Consejo Consultivo de Ciencias de la Presidencia de la República (CCC) [Science Consulting Council of the President’s Office] and belongs to the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI) [National Researcher System] of which he is a Researcher Emeritus. Dr. Adem Chahín has been visiting professor and researcher at various academic institutions. He is a former president and founder of the Unión Geofísica Mexicana [Mexican Geophysics Union], as well as editor and founder of the journal Geofísica Internacional. He received the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes [National Award for Science and Arts] 1976; was declared Researcher Emeritus of the UNAM and Premio Universidad Nacional en Investigación en Ciencias Exactas [National University Prize for Research in Exact Sciences]. The Universidad Veracruzana [Veracruz University] awarded him a Doctorate Honoris Causa in 1993 and a year later he received the Mariano Bárcena Medal, granted by the Unión Geofísica Mexicana [Mexican Geophysics Union]. The Legislature of the State of Veracruz distinguished Dr. Adem Chahín with the Adolfo Ruiz Cortines Medal for Civilian Merit. He has 136 publications in indexed international journals, including Monthly Weather Review, Tellus, International Geophysics and Atmospheric Administration. He is co-author of several textbooks. |
