He was born in Tapachula, Chiapas, in 1929. He studied medicine at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM) [National Autonomous University of Mexico] and pursued his PhD in Physiology and Biophysics at the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Cinvestav) [Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute]. He obtained a grant from the Rockefeller Foundation for a stay at the University of Illinois at Chicago, and was a fellow of the Guggenheim Foundation for a stay at Yale University. He has been a researcher and professor at the UNAM and the Instituto Nacional de Cardiología (National Institute of Cardiology), as well as visiting professor at universities in Buenos Aires, Cambridge and Emory. He is a Professor-Researcher Emeritus of the Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Cinvestav) [Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute] and Researcher Emeritus of the Sistema Nacional de Investigadores (SNI) [National Researcher System].
Dr. Aceves Ruiz’s scientific work covers several areas of biomedical research. His research on pharmacology and nervous control of the cardiac function, published in the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics and in Nature, has been cited by many researchers. He is recognized for his contributions to the knowledge of the physiopathology of Parkinson's disease, of which he developed several experimental models. His observation of the anatomofunctional organization of the basal ganglia of the brain involved in pathologies associated with alterations of the action of dopamine, such as Parkinson's disease, dystonies, attention deficit with motor hyperactivity, and schizophrenia, stands out. He has published several classic articles on the pharmacology of the dopaminergetic action. He was head of medicine testing of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) [Mexican Institute of Social Security]. President of the Sociedad Mexicana de Ciencias Fisiológicas [Mexican Society of Physiological Sciences]; member of the Evaluation Committee of the SNI. Also, he is a Member of the Consejo Consultivo de Ciencias de la Presidencia de la República (CCC) [Science Consulting Council of the President’s Office]. He obtained the Cátedra Patrimonial de Excelencia [Endowed Chair of Excellence] of the SNI; was granted the Premio Cinvestav [Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del Instituto Politécnico Nacional (Cinvestav) [Center for Research and Advanced Studies of the National Polytechnic Institute] Prize] as Leader of Researcher Formation, and the Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes [National Award for Science and Arts] in 2000. He has published 66 research papers in international journals, with over 1,500 citations. Is co-author of several textbooks on his field and has tutored 15 masters and 20 doctoral theses. |
